The next product I plan to buy for my home is definitely a PlayStation 3. Not only is it great for playing video games but it also plays Blu-ray DVDs!

With this, you can have your blu-ray and your gaming system all in one. With more features than the Xbox 360, but less games to play on it.. it remains an underappreciated powerhouse.

It's a great system, and with Blu Ray beating out HD DVD in the format wars, it's an excellent way to get an entertainment system that's complete.

Another great thing is Sony's Home that's coming out. Home is a virtual world that's going to be integrated like Xbox Live ... but with avatars, ingame movies and games and all sorts of really cool stuff.

The games are getting better and better, and more of them.

There just aren't enough good games to recommend this product for the price. However it is the most affordable Blu-ray Player avaialable in North America. It has HDMI out and is a good investment if you want to upgrade to High Definition DVD's.

This review will cover two of the three existing versions of the Playstation 3. We have one 80gb, and two of the 40gb.

Let's cover the basics of both models.

Games: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you're kidding right. I can't really knock the PS3's lack of a gaming library. Especially in comparison to the Nintendo Wii. In reality, with multi-platform titles, you can only judge a console's library on exclusive titles. This is where the PS3 is hurting. Don't get me wrong, I love Ratchet & Clank: Future Tools. However, unless you plan on buying most of your multi-platform titles for the PS3, you can't consider the PS3's library of games as a reason to purchase this system.

Graphics and Sound: I'm probably the worst person to review graphics and sound. I've never really been impressed with the way a game looks graphically or sounds. I mean, I still have fun playing Oregon Trail. Graphics and sound is highly subjective anyway. Unless you have the premium in video and audio equipment, your results will vary. We have the 80gb console connected to a 55 inch 1080p LCD RPTV set, while the two 40gb consoles are connected to our son's two 720p 37 inch LCD tv's in their rooms. Honestly, I can't tell the difference graphically. I will say this, gameplay is never choppy. It's smooth and fluid as can be. The sound is decent, which is evident when watching Blu-Ray movies.

Blu-Ray: I guess this could be considered a plus. However, remember what I said about the graphics. You can't tell the difference really between the Blu-Ray and our really good upscaling DVD player. The major selling point of Blu-Ray as a genre is for kids movies. The extras that come along with Blu-Ray movies are a plus. Forget the price of Blu-Ray discs as a factor. Just get them from Netflix, and you'll be fine.

Online Features: Xbox360 should take notes on PS3's online capabilities. Especially in price, free is perfect. I paid for a game, I should be able to play it online for free. Other than that, the PS Store is almost identical to the Xbox Marketplace. Yes, I know you can't purchase television shows or movies, but in my opinion, um, why would you? You can play demos and arcade classics. The joy of Q-bert is a must. Sony recently added themes for your UI display, so I guess if you're into that, rock on.

UI Display: This is where PS3 excels over the Xbox360. The simple fact that I can transfer my music/photo/movie library to the PS3 without any hassle, or guilt cause I own a Mac, and not a PC operating Windows. You can switch player profiles with ease, big whoop. I should also mention that if you desire to customize your themes, you can do so FREE. You can use your own pictures, just like the PSP.

Now, let's talk about the differences in consoles. Think of the PS3 as a car, and the 40gb is the bare bones low-end model. Yes, you essentially get a PS3, and you save money as well, but it's lacking. You lose backwards compatibility. Which essentially for the money you save, you lose a PS2. Other than that, 40gb fewer of hard drive space, and two fewer USB ports, there is no real difference between the two. With the 80gb version you get a copy of the game Motorstorm, while the 40gb offers a Blu-Ray version of Spiderman 3. I suggest the 80gb for a living room or home theater, and the 40gb for smaller intimate rooms.

All in all, I consider the Xbox 360 as my number one console, while the PS3 is my number two. Leaving the Nintendo Wii as number 3.
