There will be 30,000 people attending Burning Man this year. 25,000 of those people will be riding bikes with no traffic lights. 20,000 of those people will be doing so at night. More than 10,000 will be, let's say, not in the best state to be riding. A bell is very, very important. Cause the guy in front of you may start doing figure 8's because he's in lah-lah land. Not good.
In all seriousness, it is amazing that people do not get injured on bicycles at Burning Man. I was amazed that people can traffic themselves in the middle of the night with only the stars, their headlamps and headlights. I did, though, hear lots of bike bells and horns.. On the main strip, it made me think of the taxi horns in NY. Very funny, actually.

I always viewed a bell on a bicycle as a non-necessary trinket -- nothing but something to laugh about occasionally. However, as I've segued into someone who mainly gets around by bike, I've realized that a bell is so much more and completely useful.

I love the substantial quality of this bell. So much better than cheap plastic trinkets....
from the site:
You can ring our bell! Classic revolving Bike Bell, with retro good looks and a loud ring (perfect for letting those pesky pedestrians know you're coming)! Mounts easily to most handlebars.
Imported. Wipe clean.
