Let's be honest, gas can cost a pretty penny. Solution: the Honda Metropolitan scooter. You can get one for around $2000 or $1000 used (while I love Vespas, they cost more than twice that). Insurance costs about $100 a year and many states don't even require you to register it's small but efficient 50cc engine. The Met's tank is 1.33L, getting 70 to 90 miles per gallon. No, I'm not kidding. At that rate, you've only got to fill up maybe twice a week for around 4 bucks a pop. New models top out at 45mph. Good for the environment, good for your wallet.
The orange scooter in the second photo is my own. Best thing I've ever purchased.

The two-tone versions of this are clearly inspired by the Nash Metropolitan--all the way down to the badging. An adorable scooter, but not a lot of power. Check out the gas mileage, though! Wow!
