Intelligentsia does direct trade coffee... like a souped-up fair trade coffee where growers get 25% more for their beans than fair trade certification provides and where buyers visit the farms.

But let's be honest: none of this would amount to a hill of beans if their coffee weren't over-the-top fabulous, which it is.

Also, I'm mad about their packaging.

Lisasr's recommendation

I love this coffee because it is very fresh. The flavors are complex like a good wine with hints of fruit. A few months ago, I took a tour of their roasting works in Chicago and was very impressed. They work closely with farmers and pay them according to the quality of the beans.

Try the La Tortuga or the El Cuervo!
