The Eggling Herb Kit has been very popular on ThisNext. Here is the Eggling Plant Kit that sprouts and grows plants. The Eggling looks and feels like an extra large egg that is actually a white, porous ceramic container. It comes with a terra cotta tray and seed pack.
There are several different varieties of plants available, including: phlox, petunia, chysanthemum, lobelia, wild strawberry, lavender, and red pepper. Cultivation is easy - the plants can grow for up to five months in the Eggling fortified peat mixture, after which it can be planted directly into soil. Comes individually packaged in a gift box. It's a starter herb kit with a great schtick. The idea of something growing from an egg is cute, novel and very literal - an excellent gift idea.
For someone like me that has a more serious interest in gardening, the idea still has appeal.
During Winter, when you are still months away from being able to put anything outside, being able to start something anyway is tremendously appealing. I mean, I could do it the hard way, but then again why not try this novel approach? It's much more design-friendly than an ordinary comparmentalized tray of dirt with hidden seeds.
One more thing, different sites offer different varieties and prices for Egglings. So, if you are in the market for this item, shop around.

Give someone an eggling and they may think it is a large egg. Doh! Joke's on them! Actually it's a miniature garden that once water is added, will sprout a little plant! Plant choices include Basil, Mint, Petunia, Cactus, Cayenne, Chrysanthemum, Italian Parsley, Lavender de Provence, Phlox, Thyme and Wild Strawberry. THe plants can live in the egg for up to 5 months and can then be transplanted to your garden or a bigger pot. A fun gift that keeps on giving.

These aren't real bird eggs (as I thought at first glance) but they're ceramic. After you crack open the top you can water the the soil/seeds to discover wild strawberries, petunias, and mint (it's a set of 3).

Kids will get a kick out of planting and watch growing an herb or plant out of this look alike broken egg shell. Grow mint, parsley, or thyme with this unique style planter.

Egglings are one of my favorite decorative plant products! I love having plants in my home (even if I do neglect watering them from time to time). With egglings, you can plant herbs, fruit or veggies inside and then replant them outside in soil.
