I asked my husband what he wanted to Christmas last year. He said he wanted a quilt, and given my tendency to buy organic colorgrown cotton in various shades of beige, he felt the need to add, gently, "and....could you buy one with some colors in it?"

So I looked. Its hard to find a beautiful organic quilt dyed with responsible dyes. Most wind up being shades of beige. This quilt, from Tilonia, is not organic. It is fair trade, from India, and dyed with AZO-free dyes, which are less toxic than other varieties. It came in a very no-frills cloth bag, sewn on all sides, straight from India. It was a dramatic presentation, and made me feel like we'd been to India to purchase it, and shipped it back, the way we USED to travel, before the kids. It was fun to rip out all the seams of the shipping bag and look at it.

Its a razai quilt, which has a texture that is fluffy and kind of hard to describe. Its very useful in hot climates, because its warm, but not too warm. The closest thing to it that is mainstream is the Anthropologie quilts, which might be from India, but aren't nearly as well constructed as these. I don't think the Anthropologie ones are fairtrade, and AZO free, but I'm not sure.

The quilt is beautiful. At first It smelled like an airport to me, although my husband couldn't smell anything. We cleaned it, and its a wonderful quilt, has amazing colors and very sound sewing construction. I'd love to buy another quilt from this company.
