I am hot for soups this season, and an immersion blender is absolutely essential for pureeing solids in the broth to make a thick, creamy soup. It may not be quite as smooth as pouring the entire contents of a pot into a blender in batches, but it sure beats the mess of the blender AND the pouring.

I the model that came out before this one and its amazing. I make pesto, sauces, smoothies, pina coladas and salad dressing with it. Crushes ice with ease and its less clean up than a blender. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. (via Amazon)

No sense in wasting energy and potentially risking burns by pouring hot broth and solids into a blender to puree for soup. An immersion blender lets you do it right in the pot.
