Sita Sings the Blues DVD

I came across this wonderful animated movie exactly the way the director wanted me to: by word of mouth. An eclectic and enjoyable, if slightly lengthy tale, it is the tale of Sita in the Ramayana as told through 20s jazz music (Annette Hanshaw). Women through the ages have always had the same issues, it seems. In many ways, it mirrors the tale of Yashodara, who we never here about, and who was forsaken by her husband who went on to become the Buddha.
A champion of women's rights as it may seem, what the movie actually stands for is open source. The movie is available for free on Youtube and other places, and you have the maker's permission to download, remix, edit and screen the movie as you please. The DVD comes with extras but the only reason you would buy it would be to support the artist. But by all means check out the T shirts and things in the web store, I already have!
