Description

Ooma presents the legal Napsterization of telecom. With Ashton Kutcher signed on as the Creative Director, the company makes $400 broadband consoles that plug into your phone and use a peer-to-peer network to deliver free domestic local and long distance calling for life. That’s right, no more monthly bills.

How does it work? Each Ooma device is an active member of a P2P routing network whereby a consumer’s Ooma box could be routing a stranger’s phone call though they cannot hear that call, and it does not disrupt their own service. Exploiting the fact that local calls are always free, Ooma then places a landline call for the final leg of the route. Basically, the concept is to jump from peer-to-peer to get the call as close to the destination as possible, and then to use a local call to finish the connection. Very clever.
