Lillet (lee-lay) is an aperitif: its commonly served about half hour before a meal - a subtle signal indicating the end of the working day and the beginning of a time to socialize. Aperitifs come in many forms but the idea is that they lean toward the bitter side to stimulate the appetite. Lillet Blanc is made primarily from sauvignon blanc and its golden color shimmers like fire in the late afternoon sun.

For me its a summer essential and gets served regardless of whether food is coming or not. It has a magical aroma and a tantalizing flavor with a slightly bitter aftertaste that begs for another sip.

Lillet costs about $14 per bottle in most areas though its harder to find in some states. Its alcohol content is higher (its a fortified wine) so do be careful as it can go down quickly. On the rocks, with a slice of orange or lemon or just by itself is fine as long as its chilled.
