Alot better than the alternative - "video of a fireplace" and almost as cool as a wood freestanding stove (via Generate)

Having been an apartment dweller for the pretty much all my life, I believe that good design and a small footprint are next to godliness.
HALLELUIA!!
This is spare, functional as lighting and as mood modifier and beautiful. It has the additional advantage of not requiring venting and so avoids the complaints of upstairs neighbors (and possibly multiples thereof) about the hole in their floor, and possibly their ceiling.
All this for a bit over $300...

Chances are you don't live in a home with a fireplace -- or, if you do, you rarely go through the hassel of using it. In fact, I think the only time I've ever seen a real-live fireplace in action is on Christmas at my parents house.
This is a much easier way to get the ambience of a fire in your living room. Perfect for the modern home or urban loft! (via Apartment Therapy)

There are mere candles and then there are blazing hearths of fiery warmth, the Table Top Fireplace by designer Carl Mertens is something in between. (via The Green Head)

Yowch. Perfect for the urban jetsetter with an expense account. Making love by the fireplace is so yesterday - in the 21st century, we will all make love by the stark, cold glow of our chrome fire rods. (via Cool Hunting)

I thought these were pretty cool for some reason. Basically for $350 you get two stainless steel sticks attached to a slate base. When I look at this I think I am living in New York City, there's a fantastic view of the city outside my window, there's soft (but not wimpy!) jazz playing low in the background and there's some drop-dead Italian model draped over the easy chair. Now if I could get all of that for $350 I'd buy these. But as that price only gets you the steel sticks and the rock base, I guess I won't.

It's definitely a few steps above the video and since you don't have to punch a hole in your ceiling to vent it (sometimes the people in the apartment above you tend to object), I would venture to say that it is probably even cooler than the freestanding wood stove.
