Although the characters (Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo, Claire Danes as Juliet) appear in modern-day attire and settings, the words of Shakespeare as originally written in "Romeo and Juliet" are those spoken throughout the film. What truly makes this movie modern, what provides the interpretation for the sometimes inscrutable Shakesperean dialogue is the soundtrack. From the love song sung by Des'ree to the rough and tumble rock of Butthole Surfers, the soundtrack keeps you engaged, almost serving as a libretto. I loved it when I bought it and keep coming back for more.
