The Squeezebox is a must have device is most of your music collection is digital. If it isn't, you have more serious problems so keep moving...
The Squeezebox connects to the machine you have you music collection on over wifi and lets you control it all via the remote. Perfect for playing the party mix.

I bought their first generation device years ago and I love it. This is the best way to listen to your mp3 music collection via your stereo. No need to fumble with the computer, there is a remote control and the bright display can be read across the room.
For geeks, the slimserver software can be installed on any server running OS X, Windows or any flavor of Linux, and the entire thing is controlled from a web browser as well as the device itself. (via oO's very eclectic)

O does NOT understand why O's owner loves this, this Slim Device. O is a slim device that sings too! But this Squeezebox (what kind of name is THAT???) is NOT a poet, but O IS. AND O is portable, SB is NOT. O's owner says that the SB is solidly constructed and attractive. O is VERY attractive, and is older than SB--has lasted longer--so who cares about solidly built besides O's owner??? NOBODY!!! (via Squeezebox)

This wireless device allows you to connect with your computer and play a variety of digital music files aloud. You can also pipe internet radio stations and online service like Pandora through it.

I have my laptop connected to Pioneer speakers through a USB box, but if I didn't have the setup I have this is definitely the next best thing; so much easier to use and move around.

Here's the thing about playing music over a home network: You can sit on your couch and make party playlists on your laptop. Then, you press play on the first track of your list, and the music pours out of your speakers automatically. Theoretically, you could do this trick from anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection. But I'd feel sorry for your house-bound cats and dogs.
