Shiva Lingam stones represent Shiva, the epitome of masculine power and attraction, but also creator of worlds and actually a means of worship is to suppress sexual energies and direct them to mental and spiritual development.
The shape of the stone represents male energy (knowledge) and the markings, which differ greatly from stone to stone, represent female energy (wisdom). Together the two elements signify the merging of male and female energy and the stones can act as a reminder to us to balance our own male-female energies and create a more harmonious state of being.
This is a natural, non-worked stones from the Narmada River area in India. The last photo is an ablutory, used to allow worshipers to pour fluids over the stone, to "cool" the "heat" and energy. In the future, I'd like to make one.
A non-traditional "promise" gift is one possibility.
This is a hand selected 3" tall Shiva Lingam stone to make sure it has visual representation of the 3 aspects of Shiva and the 3 elements, so it has 3 visible (and attractive) color separations, in tones of cinnamon, cream and chocolate brown, all against the deep gray of the ShivaLingam stone.
Remember "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"? What happened when the Shiva Lingam stone was stolen?
