It's Jane Austen. It's beautiful language. It's imagery combined with subtle humor that makes you want to be in love. Why wouldn't you want it?

The more modern version of the great Austen novel. Perhaps not as good as the BBC version, with the American ending being well and truly blasphemous in my opinion, but with a beautiful feel, a very capable and attractive cast an a very easy-going sense whilst watching, not to mention the shocking and consuming soundtrack.

I didn't think I'd like another P&P version other than the classic with Laurence Olivier but this one is lovely. I like how for a period piece it keeps everything "real" down to the mud at the bottom of the girls' gowns as they traipse through the mud during their walks through the countryside. And Keira Knightley isn't annoying in this at all.

Having read the book, I can honestly say Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice is a wonderful interpretation of Jane Austen's amazing, wonderful, fabulous, timeless classic novel. See and read both. You won't be sorry.

Description

Because it's so beautifully filmed, in some senses this is the best Austen adaptation. The movie is well-casted (those cheekbones!), and the characters pop against the lush, curvy English landscape. The celluloid loves England's fog and rain almost as much as it loves Keira Knightley's defiant jaw and Matthew Macfadyen's basset hound-eyes.

If nothing else, watch it for the classic love declaration/refusal scene. The sexual tension captures here is enough to make the most jaded filmgoer struggle for breath. In this adaptation, they set the scene in the rain, with thoroughly soaked characters having it out while thunder and lightning echo and flash through the faux neo-classical columns behind them. It's a well-placed dash of Wuthering Heights, and while the scene's setting differed from the novel, the departure is a perfect example of how a novel can be adapted to film and keep its essence, while gaining visual nuances from the medium.
