Description
Of all the world's crops, cotton, a 300 billion dollar industry, uses the most artificial fertilizers and pesticides. That’s 25% of the world's insecticides, which in the US alone equals 84 million pounds a year. You can also think of it as one pound of insecticides required per t-shirt and pair of jeans produced. The EPA sites 7 of the 15 top pesticides as possible, likely or known carcinogens.
Some readers scoffed when I wrote about this collection for Inhabitat, but I looked into the company's labor practices. I like locally produced things and try to steer clear of "Made in China" when I have any doubt, but there are also a lot of good factories there providing much needed work to many people, so things are not always black and white.
