You can't talk about children's books without Dr. Seuss. He was brilliant. "Green Eggs and Ham" was his answer to a bet. He wrote a book with a few dozen words, all but one of which are monosyllabic.

Sam-I-Am is forever optimistic. I remain as optimistic as he and think my children will try new foods having learned that lesson from Sam. Alas, they eat no green food.

Do you know the polysyllabic word in "Green Eggs and Ham"?

One of my favorite childhood books! I don't even remember owning a copy. It just seemed to be available everywhere I went and there were books to read. Once again, even when it was well above my reading level, I still enjoyed the simple moral: try something different --- even if it's really weird! One of the teachers at my grade school even made green eggs and ham for us! Food coloring, of course, but she never said. At any rate, it was still an awe-inspiring experience. I mean, actual green eggs and ham.

I think this book resonates with kids who tend to be picky eaters, and whose moms always seem to be foisting on them something completely unappetizing.

Even after reading this book I don't know how many times, my daughter still loves it. I, on the other hand, have been known to skip large chunks of the repetitive text on occasion. The good news is that she does understand the value of trying things she thinks she might not like. Did this book help? Perhaps.

Dr. Seuss is brilliant, but that's not telling anyone anything new. His books are perfect for reading aloud and helping young ones learn to read! There is a compilation of his sketches and notes on manuscripts that I saw once, but haven't found again..if anyone knows, I'd be grateful!
