The Uni-Ball DX UM-151 (big name) is one of my recently found favorite all purpose pens. It's got a smooth flowing gel ink that WON'T smudge. It's tip comes in .28 or even .18 mm sizes (fellow geeks will understand) - perfect for crisp, clear writing. I've used mine to label lab beakers. It sturdy plastic with a nice cover to protect the solid (hard to break) tip. Another nice feature of the pen are the available colors - I prefer Blue/Black, which is just what it sounds like and looks quite nice. Elegant, actually.
