It's pretty clear that Tim Kasher, Cursive's lead singer, has gone through a pretty gnarly and very unfaithful marriage and divorce. Though the Martyr, my favorite from this album, has a lightly jazz inspired tone, the lyrics go through the emotional alienation that this guy's feeling and the fear of it only getting worse. That's what makes this piece painfully on a par with anyone who's been through that type of thing. Their drummer is phenomenal and the arsenal of guitars, horns, strings, and bells really sets this band apart. The vocals themselves are low and gravely, which is the cherry on top.
