More than a great movie: Robert Towne’s masterful script remains one of the best pieces of American writing of the last 50 years (via Amazon)

A must-see for a variety of reasons, but especially to get a glimpse of LA back in the day. Now I want to start a list of guides to San Francisco just so I can include Vertigo in that list....

oooh chinatown... yet another movie my aging hippie parents tried to get me to watch for like, a few decades (also in the category: dr strangelove, godfather 2, etc etc).... i assumed it was a generational thing, like how i could never convince them to watch royal tennebaums or big lebowski... but then, i took screenwriting and i had to watch a "classic movie with an amazing script" and this was the only one i hadn't seen (hello, how about a clue that it is amazing)... i rented it, watched it, and ordered it off amazon before the movie was even finished. though its debatable, it is the quintessential LA movie in my mind, and definitely one of the top 20 of all time... so good. trust me. Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying.
Fabulous movie - a must-see!!
