Nothing in my life has provided me such an ample supply of both enjoyment and despair than ballet. Having realized at an early age that my turnout was quite unexceptional, I learned to embrace jazz, tap, modern and, later, aerobic dance in addition to my first dancing love. Now that the writings of Akim Volynsky have been translated into English, I know I am far from alone in my adoration of ballet and its artists. Detailing the facial and physical features, movements, personality, size and strength of Anna Pavlova, George Balanchine, Isadora Duncan and several of their contemporaries, Volynsky highlights the extraordinary depth of ballet's power and mystery.
