Available this year, the eee (which stands for easy to use, easy to play, easy to learn), is a notebook computer running a version of Linux that is suitable for anyone from children to seniors. It will have WiFi, a flash hard drive, a modem, USB 2.0, Ethernet and it weighs around 2 pounds.

This new Asus laptop (first version released Oct 2007) is unique both for its small size (7 inch screen - 2 lbs) and its low price (less than $400). It runs Linux out of the box(!), but you can install Windows XP on it if you feel the need. One important difference from a "normal" laptop is that this uses a flash hard drive (SSD), which is smaller and faster (for reading) than a conventional hard drive. The trade off is that you get much less space - 4GB in this model with an 8GB model scheduled to be released before Christmas. But with Wi-Fi and USB, you should be able to use this laptop quite nicely if you have another computer or hard drive to use it with. It even comes with a built in iSight like camera. This is a great concept and an incredible price. I haven't ordered one yet, but all the reviews on Amazon have been positive, so I'm hoping to get one as a stocking stuffer!

The ASUS Eee PC 4G is the answer to the inexpensive One Laptop Per Child initiative. At $400 and 2lbs this is very inexpensive and ultra portable. However you aren't getting a traditional computer like you might be used to. It is set up with a Linux operating system and a 4gb solid state hard drive. Rumor has it, if you open the computer (voids your warranty) there are expansion slots to increase your storage. So there is a possibility that ASUS will be releasing upgrades. You could also swap out the memory chip (512) for something larger. However, if you are looking for a simple, inexpensive, portable laptop you have got it right here. The computer comes loaded with software to learn, play, work, and access the Internet. The interface setup is very simple, it could easily be mastered by a child or a technophobe.

For a blogging girl-on-the go, it couldn't get any better than the Asus Eee PC that is tiny and light - practically anorexic at just 2 pounds, but durable enough to withstand the bumps of being in a rolling suitcase. The PC magically finds the Internet when you start it up, so you can upload pictures, write, and post from anywhere. For the techgeeks: Intel Celeron Processor (800MHz), 1GB RAM, 8GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded

Small, light, cheap(-ish). Ideal for internet browsing and taking notes. Unfortunately, misses decent Bluetooth support.

I love this little computer. It's super tiny, so don't expect a CD drive (my biggest surprise). The keys and touchpad are a little difficult to get used to, but I'm almost there :o) It has a couple little surprises I didn't know...a web cam, audio recorder, and...well, I'll let you find out for yourself. It's a great little device, and affordable. Liz

Not a toy, a full-functional mini-laptop that isn't burdened by bloated software. The perfect solution for anyone who needs more functionality than a smart phone provides. This device runs an actual office suite and can read/write files created by Word.
