  Because I have way too many books, and books of all different sizes. They look funny, and not very attractive when I try to put them on the shelf next to other books of different sizes. i like that this forces you to sort this out. And it shows smalled slots, which I would use for the times when I don't feel like putting a book away. Right now I just put it on top of other books and it looks a mess. Too bad I can't afford this!
