I like the visual pun that plays with the black bar which used to appear print and film over the eyes to protect the identity of individuals caught up in scandal. Some have said it's got a Geordi LaForge VISOR thing going on, or the Star Trek episode "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" where Spock melds with Kollos (the box Medusan Ambassador) on the bridge.
