Think like an end user, not in a design bubble! This book explains how and why design effects the usability of everyday objects - a classic example being a door that doesn't clearly define push or pull. Though some examples are a bit dated, the concepts are not. Your every day life would be simpler and easier if more of Don Norman's ideas were applied to objects, especially technology.
