Reading can be fun, but I confess that I sometimes ran out of ideas to make learning to read a game for my child. Enter Hot Dots to save the day. My daughter really loved playing with these- the pen (sold separately) gives off all kinds of cool sound effects and light bursts. This is the first set in the phonics series and the pen works with all of them so you can expand as your child progresses- or you can use them without the pen if you choose. My daughter loved doing these on her own or with me.
