Francesca Lia Block probably has a lot to do with why I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 after spending all of my first 25 years in the Northeast. She romanticizes the city in such a powerful-yet-subtle manner that, if you really absorb it, continues to color the whole L.A. landscape in a really exciting and beautiful way. I always go back to the Dangerous Angels series when I need an enduring pick-me-up and a little break from the sometimes-not-so-lovely realities of living in Shangri-La/Hell-A.

I adore this book, which is a collection of her early short novels. They're just adorable, especially the first one: Weetzie Bat
