There's a less expensive version of 3.5, however, I feel I should do a recommendation based on the release of version 4.0 of D&D. 4.0 is perfect for inexperienced players, beginners, and people unfamiliar with pen and paper rpgs at all -- but it's so simplified that more experienced rpg fans will probably enjoy 3.5 more.

While the same as the other handbook, it's a collectors item... and I just have to collect items like this even when I know the value is in the content...not the leather cover :-) (via Chris)
