I really liked this book. "Soldier of the Press," covers the time period from 1936 and civil war in Spain to the Balkans campaign of World War II before America entered the war, then into 1943 with British and American actions in North Africa. The history buff in me was well-satisfied by the interesting details of events from the perspective of a non-combatant journalist caught up in the danger, intrigue and front-line fighting. The part of me that appreciates human interest and personal relationships was also satisfied that Henry "Hank" Gorrell included the stories of ordinary soldiers and civilians in his manuscript. He describes well the conditions of the soldiers who fought, the civilians who lived and died, and the journalists who overcame tremendous obstacles to get their stories published throughout the world. The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the original manuscript in a family attic after 60 years added another dimension to my satisfaction. You can't help but wonder how Gorrell survived almost ten years of intense danger, deprivation and separtaion from home and family. This book is a good read for historians, writers, journalists, educators and anyone who appreciates unsung heroes.
