This movie is an award winnin gclassic that everybody should see at least once. Oprah WHinfrey, Whoppi Goldberg and Danny Glover are in it. It is DIrected by Steven Spielberg. At the time, when he was appointed the director, there was much outrage in the Black community that they would hire a white man to tell a Black story as important as this one (dealing with race, slavery, etc). Turns out, they hired the best possible white man for the job.

Watch a movie all about the color purple. At least that's what I think it's about... well might as well watch it and see. I'm sure it's not going to be sad or dramatic at all. Especially shouldn't be about slavery.

LaShaunda wrote a fabulous recommendation of this book, and I couldn't agree more. The "Color Purple" earned the number 6 spot on the Most Frequently Banned Books of 2007 for it's references to homosexuality, rape and offensive language.

What can I say? Whoopi Goldberg gave the best performance of her movie career. And even though the entire cast and irector were shunned from receiving Oscars, the public knows greatness when we see it. (via Netflix)

It's so hard to pick a favorite movie with so many great ones out there but if I had to choose it would definitely be The Color Purple.

The Color Purple is one of most powerful books that you will read. There is also a film based on the novel which is equally as powerful, but the novel offers a little more detail and graphics than a movie made at that time could show.

Those not familiar with The Color Purple, it follows a young Black woman named Cecile who was forced into an abusive marriage at age 14 and separated from her family. For a long time, she served as more of a slave than a wife to her husband, even being forced to call him Mister. An encounter and bond with her husband's mistress though helps give Cecile the courage and strength she needs to stand up and fight back. Cecile works to become a poster child for power, freedom, and overcoming male domination and abuse.
