tvotr's debut ep (not counting ok calculator) has the outstanding "staring at the sun," as well as a prison worksong version of the pixies' "mr. grieves." superb.

I used to make fun of people for saying things like, "yeah, I was into them until their first record came out," but that's pretty much what happened to me with this band. I don't know what I was expecting with Desperate Youth, but it didn't deliver on the epic quality of this EP for me. That said, seeing this band three times between this EP and the first LP, I got a good sense of the core trio coming to grips with playing with a killer rhythm section and learning to let go onstage. By the third time I saw them, months after they had recorded Desperate Youth, they were starting to rip. I think that plays out a little better in the second album. Anyway: good EP.
