This is one of my favorite books. Great story of the roaring 20's.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

It is almost tragic that teenagers are "forced" to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald in high school, for they will read through the book like machines, write a paper about a superficial theme like corruption caused by money, love scorned, etc., and forget about the story as they run off to cheerleading and football practices.

If you have done that, forgotten about The Great Gatsby because you associate it with high school busy work, get over it, and read the book again. When you were in high school, you didn't have enough of your history to understand, but now, as an adult, the story will have a deeper meaning beyond just those "themes" we scraped from Cliff's Notes.

I read The Great Gatsby once a year.

His only crime was wanting to rise above his humble beginnings. But his biggest mistake was in thinking that would gain him entree into the tightly knit society of which his beloved Daisy was a part. A tragic romance that I recommend both reading (for the dramatic intensity) and watching (for the stunning costumes and musical score.)

Usually, I moan in disgust when I think about the classics I was forced to read in high school but The Great Gatsby actually turned out to be one of my favorite novels of all time. F. Scott Fitzgerald created a wonderful recreation of the 1920's and every emotion I felt for and toward the characters and events were genuine because I get so sucked in to their world.
