Nikon USA: D40 Kit
A recommendation by hanahula

This camera takes amazing pictures. And it is a wonderful tool for both the amateur and the professional photographer. (Although if you are more on the professional end of the spectrum you might want to consider upgrading to the D40X.) Now that I own one of my own, I am no longer embarrassed to share my work with family and friends. I have even been inspired to create my own photo blog since I bought this little powerhouse.

I just bought this camera after weeks and weeks of research and I LOVE this camera. We have had a digital point-and-shoot but I haven't loved the pictures and I have been irritated with how many pictures I miss due to the slow turn on, zoom and focus. This Nikon is beyond fast and takes such amazing, crisp, quality photos. It has a very large (2.5”) LCD monitor which makes the instant gratification of digital that much more fun. I have always owned a 35mm SLR but was resistant to make the digital switch mainly because of cost. This camera is by no means cheap, but it is reasonable and in my opinion, worth the investment. Consider this the ultimate gift for yourself.

This is my first SLR. It's super light and takes amazing pictures. A terrific starter camera that is absolutely affordable.

D40 is a nice base to build on. More economical than the D50. the Nikon 28-200 lens is convenient and a good value, even if it seems ridiculously expensive initially at $900

I'll tell you one thing, man; this camera knows its stuff. I wake up every morning and give it a big hug because I know it's gonna help me get through my day. A camera that's better than caffeine, you say?
Why, yes. I do. I do say it. It's true, after all.
Also, it's made me want to become a professional photographer. Not because I know what I'm doing - but because IT knows what I'm doing. I would marry it if I weren't already spoken for.
