This slow food restaurant was an amazing find on my road trip through the heart of Texas. Chef Morgan makes everything with stuff from local growers and ranches. On my way here I stopped at Veldhuizen Dairy where they make raw milk hard cheese that rivel european ones. Mr. Veldhuizen told me to stop by the Turtle in Brownwood on my way to Coleman. I would never have found this yuummy place otherwise as it is not on the highway but tucked away in downtown Brownwood. I ate about three servings of their home made gelato (what they call a medium) because I couldn't decide on a flavor. I bought chocolate hazel nut which was creamy just like what I had in Italy, and I had the blood orange sorbetto which tastes a little like sweet tarts, but the best was a basil tarragon gelato. The counter girl said they were serving this unusal flavor on top of peaches foster with special that night. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for dinner. Instead I had a sandwich - homemade challah with chicken salad and crispy curly curly potato fries and hit the road. (via The Turtle Restaurant)
