A few years ago, my husband gave me a wine essence kit for my birthday. Since then, we've had fun pulling it out, sniffing the containers, and trying to match the smells in each numbered, keyed vile to the aromas in our wine. Aside from being educational, the kit is a nice ice breaker for small, casual get-togethers. When friends come over, I let them play with the wine aroma kit while I finish cooking. Everyone finds it amusing -- wine novices and experts alike.

I'm a bit of a snoot when it comes to my hooch, and when it comes to wine, it's not all divine. I'm anti-oak when it comes to my whites, but I adore it in my reds. I wonder what else I'll learn with a kit like this. It gives you a reason to get trashed, like you needed one.
