Light, compact, and comfortable. Self inflating - these are much better than older style foam or bulky inflatable mats. They sell 3 styles of self inflating mattresses - this is the medium weight/bulk version that I use.

A camping essential that's versatile enough to be adapted for even non-outdoor uses. Pull one up on the floor next to a friend in a B&B or hostel, and voila, a room for two at a single price. Or buy a sleeve and turn it into a relatively comfortable and lghtweight, portable trekker's chair.

I still have a small Therm-a-Rest pad I used backpacking on the Appalachian Trail a couple decades ago. It only suports from hips to shoulders, but when you're weary that's all you really need for comfortable sleeping in a tent. The light weight and tiny space it takes up after rolling are also important when every ounce and cubic inch count.
