I don't paddle much whitewater, but we use one of these for wilderness lake trips (in the Boundary Waters) and the peace of mind of knowing that your sleeping bag and other essentials will be dry at the end of the day no matter what is worth it. A very useful pack and not too bad on the portages either (it doesn't hurt that it's usually filled with low-density gear). (via Midwest Mountaineering)
