Bought this briefcase for my hubby for his birthday last year. Sometimes quality is truly worth paying for... this briefcase may just outlast his career.

All leather... front buckles actually have magnetic "snaps", so no buckling required to open and close the bag. The shoulder strap is leather with reinforced nylon webbing on the backside - this strap won't stretch, or break.

With this bag you get what you pay for... and it's worth every last cent! :)

Can this handle a laptop?

yes it can! has a nice padded pocket for it. L has a mid-size laptop that fits snugly, but with room on the ends. it's not the widest, but will fit a binder and a few files in addition to the laptop. his only complaint, which he realizes is a function of the flap design he wanted - when using the hand-hold the bag hangs at a slight angle. that's the long answer. ;)
