In a world where we tend to be over-medicated and under-diagnosed, journalist Norah Vincent decided to go off of her meds and voluntarily commit her to three separate psychiatric institutions over the course of the year. What she discovers are patients that can tell that she isn't the "real deal" and overwhelmed doctors and nurses that cannot seem to tell the difference.

Vincent's journey is a valuable meditation on self-discovery and where part of the prescription for mental illness ultimately lies --- within the self. Her observations of interactions with staff paint a dysfunctional picture of the mental health system in general. (via amazon.com)
