80s dystopia by gifted director Terry Gilliam and -- I always forget this until I start watching the movie -- Robert De Niro. It's a classic.

Amazingly prophetic movie about a post-apocolyptic future where the government enforced fear of terrorism allows society to crumble, while the insanely opulent have cosmetic surgery parties. Oh, that's happening now? Oh yeah.

This is a brilliant, ingenious movie about the line between reality and fantasy, and says some powerful things about society and the human mind. It's one of my all time favorites, and this Criterion Collection DVD has a ridiculous amount of extra material (3 discs!)

Seriously, check it out! (via imdb.com)

I try to see this movie at least once a year, as I grow older Brazil seems to make more and more sense - it is prophetic, and gives a great sense of perspective about the absurdities of our bizarre social norms. Personally, I think this is one of De Niro's most endearing roles...he's so NOT De Niro, but my absolute favorite perormance/character/message in the whole film is Katherine Helmond's (a la Who's The Boss) role as Ms. Ida Lowry. This movie is a classic for sure, and so very very Beep. (via gordon)

One of the smartest, most darkly comic films ever. A vision of a truly weird but somehow convincing failed utopia, Brazil is one intense movie. It deals w/the large issues of freedom, personal responsibility, love, and oppression in an action-packed film and is Gilliam's best, imho (though Time Bandits rocks too).

Also as Joe mentions, De Niro is in this movie and his character is brilliant: an insurgent plumber! (via johnpolinsky)

Director Gilliam creates a brave new world of bizarre sights and sounds in this wonderfully whimsical retro-future movie. A great, great movie!! (via joe)
