Originally from Chester-le-Street, County Durham, Tracy studied pattern cutting and construction at Leeds, and then studied costume making at London College of Fashion.
She joined the Royal School of Needlework in 1991 on the three year apprenticeship scheme and then went onto coordinating and teaching on the apprenticeship herself. She left the school in 2001 to start her own freelance business back in the Northeast concentrating on teaching, commission work and producing some of her own work.
In 2003, Tracy moved into premises in 3 Fowlers Yard, Back Silver Street, Durham City within a community of other artists. Within her workspace, Tracy teaches workshops, classes and courses, works on commission work and preparation for various work as well as being open to sell specialist threads and materials for embroidery.
