Sarah Hodgson, a dog trainer for over 20 years, recently published Miss Sarah's Guide to Etiquette for Dogs & Their People. Here are a few tips she offers in the book:

- Establish proper etiquette by creating a special place by your door where your dog can wait when company arrives.
- Don't allow dogs to loiter nearby while you are eating. Ask all guests to ignore the dog if it does come nearby.
- Teach your dog to lie on a floormat while you dine. Feed your dog before you sit down to eat. If he comes to the table during the meal, send him or her to their special mat and instruct them to "Settle."
