One of the most surprising things about my first job out of college was that we had an official, company-wide gaming session on Friday afternoons (it was the CEO's idea!) This is what we played. It's available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. The game involves splitting up into teams to capture targets, vehicles, and to dominate the playing field. It's a great way to improve your reflexes and learn to play as a team.
I wish I could recommend Unreal Tournament 3 but, as far as I can determine, Epic still hasn't released the linux port. And moving to the couch and turning on the ps3 to play (assuming I learn to operate the infernal two-thumbstick interface in vogue on consoles) reduces to nil the chance that I'll ever return to work. So I am forced to second Jim's recommendation of UT2004. And why not? Really, it's the pinnacle of hyperactive first person shooters. The concept refined to the point where bizarre behaviors like tele-fragging have become a part of regular gameplay.
I desperately need to get this. No, I'm not a computer game guy, but I really want to beat Jim at this.
