During one of my trips to Tokyo, Japan, I was browsing around the shops in Palette Town (Pa-re-to town) when i came across this quaint shop called SOU SOU. I had always had a fascination in traditional Japanese footwear, so imagine my pleasant surprise when I found that not only did this store produce tabi socks, they also had tabi shoes (made in Japan I believe)! With a variety of dyed fabrics, designs, and products, almost anything you get from SOU SOU is going to look uniquely Japan, without the tacky made-for-tourist look.
These are split-toe canvas jikatabi shoes with rubber soles...and boy can these shoes turn heads...The company is based in Kyoto, chief designer being Maki Hashimoto. They are actually rather comfortable once you get used to the split toe design. And the feel of these on your feet is much more of an organic sensation. You feel the ground as you walk, but for those less inclined to do so, extra inner soles can be added easily.
Check out the designs at the site even if you aren't planning on buying...just for the art (on the shoes, socks, apparel, etc.) ... But for those who plan on purchasing a pair, may I also suggest getting tabi socks (socks with a similar split-toe design), as it would be a pain wearing normal socks in these shoes..believe me..
