Many an idiot would claim that quality artistic cinema is as good as gone. We could all just sit around and wait five years for the next Lynch/Cronenberg/Wenders/Altman/etc. movies - and these are all fantastic and established direcotrs - but we can also dig just a little bit deeper and find that there is some amazing cinema being created these days. I'm not even talking about the underground or the indie - this is pure art that has reached success in the mainstream as well. The Life Aquatic is one of those dream-like works of art, epic yet subtle, and beautiful as hell. It's useless describing it, just watch it NOW.

Such a cute film with an amazing cast! I really want a uniform like Dr. Zissou's ... red beenie, blue jumper and sweet sneakers. But I'm recommending the movie not the clothes in the movie! A man and a spotted tiger shark that glows in the dark.

This is my favorite Wes Anderson movie. I even have a favorite part - the rainbow seahorse. I want one of my own. No joke, someone buy me one.

In The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, director Wes Anderson takes his familiar stable of actors on a field trip to a fantasy aquarium, complete with stop-motion, candy-striped crabs and rainbow seahorses. And though Anderson does expand his horizons in terms of retro-special effects and a whimsical use of color, fans will otherwise find themselves in well-charted waters. As The Life Aquatic opens, Zissou (Bill Murray), a self-involved, Jacques Cousteau-like filmmaker, has just released a documentary depicting the death of his best friend Esteban, who was eaten by some sort of sea creature--possibly a jaguar shark. Zissou’s troubles also include his waning popularity with the public, and a nemesis (Jeff Goldblum) who hogs up all the grant money. Hope arrives in the form of Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), an amiable Kentuckian who may be Zissou’s son. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for fatherhood, Zissou welcomes Ned--and Ned in turn saves Zissou’s new documentary (in which he seeks revenge on the jaguar shark) in more ways than one. One of Wes Anderson’s greatest achievements as a director to date has been launching the autumnal melancholy phase of Bill Murray’s career, starting with Rushmore in 1998, and Murray delivers a similarly comedic yet low-key performance here.

I'm with everyone else here - this film is amazing. Artfully done with a great cast and story. You get a few laughs thrown in, besides the whole gamut of emotions this film goes through. My first Wes Andersonn film, certainly not my last. HIghly recommend.
