I think I know the secret that gives models and celebrities perfect bitten-red lips that last all day.

After coming up empty from the Bobbi Brown counter (no more mattifying lip stain on stock!), I decided to check out Laura Mercier's version of lip stains.

Allure magazine recommended the Sugar Violet shade, but Scarlet caught my eye. When I saw it, I knew it was something special. And it was.

The classic red shade looked simple, catchy, but not over-the-top. And normally, red shades don't seem to blend well with my skin tone, but this one did.

And when I began to wipe it off (it was quite hard to remove the stain -- which is the point, I guess), it left this great, just-bitten reddish shade on my lips. A shade I have successfully replicated to complement my everyday look.

Another thing to write home about is the texture. Not too creamy, not glossy, but not too severe and not at all drying. It's as mind-blowing as Bobbi Brown's lip stain.
