This book tells the story of a journalist and his mid-life crisis. Based on real events, the American-born Thompson explores what his life might have been like if his father had taken a dangerous posting in Bogota, Colombia over the relatively idyllic base of Sydney, Australia.

Thompson does not come across as the most like-able of characters, practically abandoning his wife and new born to pursue this trip. To his credit, he acknowledges his morally questionable actions, and this context gives the reader a sense of the seriousness of this yearning for change. Compelling reading.
