The Purple Ribbon is a symbol of cancer awareness and support. The idea came from Janet Rodriguez who was inspired by actor Michael Landon's call for support and remedies when he publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in April, 1991. Her idea was a symbol.... A purple bow to symbolize the purple heart awarded to courageous soldiers, because cancer patients are in a battle against this disease. Janet's purple bow of hope, courage and support slowly caught on with Landon and throughout the world.

Purple Ribbons and Bows are the world's symbol of support for cancer....ALL CANCERS. This is something that no other cancer affiliated organization has ever provided to their patients...a "common" symbol of support. The purpose of the ribbon is to communicate care, love and concern for those people throughout the world whose lives have been touched by cancer. The way it works is cancer patients, their families and friends wear the purple ribbon from the time of diagnosis throughout treatment.
