Following the untimely death of her junkie mother, a young girl is led by her washed up rocker father to the place where he grew up, a desolate house on a prairie in the middle of nowhere. Once her father dies of a drug overdose, she retreats into her imagination with nothing but doll heads, talking squirrels, a mentally handicapped man-boy, and a psychotic taxidermist to keep her company.
This could be the most disturbing film I've ever seen - which is exactly why I recommend it - I was comatose and had to watch two hours of Eddie Izzard afterwards before I was able to fall asleep. I will forever be in awe of Gilliam's ability to call forth that kind of command over the audience's imagination, no matter how traumatizing this vision may have been.
