Crude, effective, it’s the indestructible do-anything machine. Your life would not sound the same if Leo Fender had been a dentist.

I was brought up on old punk, and always wanted a tele. Tough, versatile, a classic.

This is actually a Fender Stratocaster. Still, a classic instrument and worthy of anyone's guitar arsenal (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix...). This is the famed guitar brand featured in "Wayne's World". With three single-coil pickups, one volume, and two tone controls, you can get a variety of different sounds, especially given the five-position toggle switch...downside is it can be overwhelming for a beginner.

Tele's are great guitars. Great sound, used by some of the greatest players in history. True vintage ones will cost you a pretty penny, but Fender is still making new ones for reasonable prices in emerging countries like Japan, Mexico, Korea, etc., as well as true new, US ones for a little more. Or, split the difference and get "closet classics" - new guitars beaten up a bit to be like the way they would have been if you'd actually purchased it in 1954. Your money is safe with a Tele. Great for students as they are high-quality but don't have too many twiddly bits to deal with.
